3 Essential Mulch Tips You Should Remember

mulch tips

One of the best things that you can do for your plants is to put mulch around them. But a lot of people do it incorrectly so that they actually harm the plants rather than help them. Below are some tips that you can use to make sure that you are using mulch correctly.

Mulch Tips 1 – Don’t Place it Right Against Tree Bases or Plant Crowns

When you place it right in contact with the tree trunks or stems might retain more moisture around the plant’s base. This can mean that your plant becomes diseased. You also don’t want to have high mulch piles because that can invite unwanted guests like varmints and insects.

Mulch Tips 2 – Don’t Apply Mulch Thickly

When you pile wood mulch to a depth of over three inches it can begin rotting faster. It can create a mat that looks like thatch that can keep the water from getting into the soil. The plants don’t get the moisture that they need. The layer shouldn’t be more than 3” thick.

Mulch Tips 3 – Thoroughly Water New Bark or Wood Mulches

A lot of good mulches are stored in high piles that can reach elevated temperatures. When the much get bagged or spread, those microorganisms that are tolerant to the high temperatures will die as the mulch is cooling. If it dries out or stays dry, fungi might colonize your mulch and create a surface that is water-repellant.
