Update: A Natural Raised Patio

July 21, 2014 by service@rilawncare.com Leave a Comment

Phase Three: We’re excited to update you on one of the projects we’ve been working on for over a year now. Our raised, natural stone patio is in phase three of the project — We focused on plantings this year and, upon the request of the client, we incorporated as many native plants as possible. We planted Bayberries, Winterberries, Azaleas, Mountain Laurels, and Lupine to name a few. We are truly enjoying working on this project and wanted to share a few photos with you below. We’ve also included our write-ups from last year to give you an idea of the extent of the project!

Natural Stone Patio: Before and After

Phase Two: After two months of planning, designing, and a week of constructing, we finally completed phase two of our South Kingstown raised patio. For the 360 square feet we decided to use New England flagstone for a natural look with natural boulders. The stones were originally from an old stone wall in Connecticut and there were bluish stones, reddish stones and stones with a yellow hue.

After multiple rounds of laying processed gravel and compaction, we laid the stones in bedding sand. In the center we laid the bigger stones and slowly laid the smaller stones around for a ray effect. We used jumbo cobbles for a border to highlight the flagging and cemented them in. The last step was to fill the joints with Gator Dust and wet it.

In the next few phases we will construct a pergola, install our plantings and uncover the natural stone steps leading up to the patio. A big thanks to Lee Wyman and Right Coast Landscapes for their help in producing the hardscaping. Stay tuned for more!

Phase One: This past winter, the storm Nemo hit Rhode Island pretty hard and with it destroyed many properties. The storm created severe damage in one of our client’s back yards. The contractor who had built their house had piled all of the excess boulders they had excavated into one piece of their property. When winter storm Nemo hit, a 60 ft Oak Tree split in half and fell down, exposing all of the rocks that had been underground.

You can see the results in the picture. A huge pile of rocks with really no rhyme or reason to it at all. That’s where we stepped in – We knew we could turn their misfortune into a gorgeous outdoor space, without the cost of materials! We are a resourceful, environmentally-conscious company that always strives to use what’s already on the property as much as we can. We decided to use everything that was ripped up from the ground to build a raised patio with natural stone steps.

At this point in the project we have excavated, constructed and filled the patio section of the property and are working on completing it with the finishing touches and plantings. Please stay tuned for an update on the finished project with pictures!

It’s All About The Entrance

driveway-project-1

We recently created a gorgeous cobblestone apron for one of our clients and we’re thrilled with the outcome (as is he!).

Richard wanted an apron to function as an attractive entrance into his driveway, to replace the old cracking asphalt, and to hold the pea stone in the driveway by creating an edge. We jackhammered the asphalt into strips and removed the top 6 inches until we hit compact gravel. We then put three inches of mortar sand down and set the cobbles in.

Because the driveway is on a main road, we wanted to give it some character that would set it apart from all the other cobblestone aprons. We decided to use red, regulation-size cobbles in the center of the driveway. We found three discolored jumbo blocks at the bottom of our pallet and decided they would look good in the middle of the frame. After setting all the stones, we filled the gaps with cement-like filler and wet it.

We also cleaned the garden beds around the edges and created new beds on both sides. We planted two upright Japanese Plum Yews on either side of the driveway, accenting the entrance pillars. We chose this unique shrub because it is shade-tolerant and will tolerate of bad soil, because the area will get a lot of salt and sand in the winter months.
