Why add color to your landscape?
Adding color to your yard can boost a feeling of coherence and unity for you as well as your guests. All it takes is a little bit of thoughtful planning ahead of time and pretty soon your landscape can look like a beautiful, vibrant, cohesive piece of art. Complementary colors (directly across from each other on the color wheel), such as oranges with blues or purples with yellows work great together while a monochromatic or analogous palette can be quite bold and attention grabbing as well.
Things To Pay Special Attention To
Using color in your landscape is a powerful tool. When planning what colors to use and where to use them, think of focal points you want to draw attention to. These could include outdoor artwork, fountains, and decorations. Color can also be used to draw attention away from other things such as a neighbor’s recycling bin or a less than attractive fence or pole. Try not to be too sporadic with your planting. Large areas of color can be very pleasing to the eye while too much variation in a smaller space can look disjointed and confusing.
A few couple more things to consider when planning the color of your landscape is the flowering times and heights of everything you are planting. Varying heights of everything you are planting can allow you to almost paint your landscape in separate layers. Different flowering times can help you reflect the seasons. Some examples of this would be utilizing eye catching red dahlias in the summer time, yellow tulips in the spring, and rust colored mums in the fall.
The main thing to remember is to have fun! Keep things as simple, or as complex as you are comfortable with. While planning, implementing, and maintaining a beautifully landscaped yard can seem like an endless job, it can also be quite fun and even therapeutic.
