4 Late Summer Lawn Care Tips

late summer lawn care

Now that it’s August, one of the things that you want to do is make sure that you are taking good care of your lawn. Below are four late summer lawn care tips that you can use to make sure that your lawn is doing well and that it’s prepared for the cooler weather.

Late Summer Lawn Care Tip 1 – Water During the AM

Your lawn needs to be watered early. Between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. is the best time. This is when the temperatures are the lowest. It’s also going to give your grass the moisture it needs to remain hydrated.

Late Summer Lawn Care Tip 2 – Keep the Blades High

Don’t remove over one-third of the grass blade. When your grass has more surface, it can keep its moisture better. Keeping the deck higher is going to help the grass store up the nutrients and moisture for the winter.

Late Summer Lawn Care Tip 3 – Sharpen Mower Blades

When your blades are dull, they can tear the grass and bend it rather than cutting the grass cleanly. When this happens, it can leave them open to disease, pests, and drought. Your blades should be sharpened 3 or so times during your mowing season.

Late Summer Lawn Care Tip 4 – Apply Fertilizer

Based on your grass type, it’s a good idea to apply fertilizer during the late summer or during the fall. Some grasses that are made for the warm season, should get fertilized now. If your grass is a cool season type, fertilize during the fall.
