A Raised Vegetable Garden

March 5, 2014 by service@rilawncare.com Leave a Comment

Our owner, Justin, built his own raised beds this year to create a vegetable garden for his home! We wanted to share the progression throughout the summer months as the garden is thriving. The right side of the garden has corn, lettuce, sunflowers, peas, and carrots – all grown from seed. The left side of the garden has green beans, cherry tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, cauliflower, squash, hot peppers and eggplant. The beds themselves are made from pressure-treated wood and he used a half compost/half topsoil mix. He fertilizes with organic vegetable fertilizer once per month.

We can’t wait to go over to his house for dinner this summer!

Adding Character and Color with a Garden Bed

March 5, 2014 by service@rilawncare.com Leave a Comment

We recently installed a garden bed for a client who was looking to add some character and color to their outdoor space as well as break up their large, open lawn.

We decided to add a unique group of trees, grasses and shrubs to the area. We chose smaller plants to incorporate now because the younger (and not root-bound) the plant is when it is put into your garden, the larger and healthier it will grow and acclimate to your property.

Before and After

We planted a Japanese Maple Tree for drama and height, two Maiden Grasses for texture and multi-seasonal interest, a Boxwood shrub for greenery and fullness, and an Euonymous Tree for its evergreen, bi-color foliage. We then covered the bed with Black Cedar Mulch to give it a finished, manicured look.

We’ve included a Before/After shot from this season and we’ll be sure to add another next year once everything has started to take off!

Turning a Storm-Damaged Property into an Outdoor Oasis

March 5, 2014 by service@rilawncare.com Leave a Comment

BeforeAfterThis past winter, the storm Nemo hit Rhode Island pretty hard and with it destroyed many properties. The storm created severe damage in one of our client’s back yards. The contractor who had built their house had piled all of the excess boulders they had excavated into one piece of their property. When winter storm Nemo hit, a 60 foot Oak Tree split in half and fell down, exposing all of the rocks that had been underground.

You can see the results in the picture. A huge pile of rocks with really no rhyme or reason to it at all. That’s where we stepped in – we knew we could turn their misfortune into a gorgeous outdoor space, without the cost of materials! We are a resourceful, environmentally-conscious company that always strives to use what’s already on the property as much as we can. We decided to use everything that was ripped up from the ground to build a raised patio with natural stone steps.

At this point in the project we have excavated, constructed and filled the patio section of the property and are working on completing it with the finishing touches and plantings. Stay tuned for an update on the finished project with pictures!
